JOURNEY Through Some of Eastern Virginia's History

We spent the last few weeks in Eastern Pennsylvania. While staying Doswell, we visited Fredericksburg and Richmond, both great places for historical sites.

In Fredericksburg, we visited the Fredericksburg Battlefield National Parks Site and learned about the battle and at least one of the soldiers. Richard Rowland Kirkland's story is very great and inspiring. Afterward we walked to the Chatham House (Union Hospital) and walked the grounds that overlooked Fredericksburg. Finally, we stopped in at the Capitol Ale House for lunch. Their selection of beers is pretty ridiculous and I highly recommend dropping in.

The following weekend, we stopped in at the Richmond Battlefield Site, Cold Harbor, to see the trenches that still exist that were dug during the civil war. The idea that a line of soliders could stretch 7 miles is pretty incredible, but that the 18000 men died in the battle is maddening.

We also stopped and visited the Maggie L Walker house and learned her story while touring her home in Richmond and finished our visit by dropping in on the Governor of Virginia and touring the Capitol Grounds.
